Places to Visit in Lesvos Island

Medieval Castle

Originally built in the Middle Ages, but undergoing many transformations by the Genoese and Turks, the Castle of Lesvos is one of the most powerful castles in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Petrified Forest

This forest, 12 km from Sigri, is a rare natural site and has been petrified due to the intense volcanic activity of the region. It was officially declared a natural monument in 1985.

World of Ouzo Museum

Isidoros Arvanitis’s Museum of the World of Ouzo is located in a wonderful olive grove just minutes from the village of Plomari. Operating for over 120 years, this distillery has a long tradition in Ouzo production and exports its Ouzo to 30 countries worldwide.

Barbayannis Ouzo Museum

This museum is actually a factory producing Ouzo, the traditional drink of Lesvos. After visiting the museum, you can buy it by tasting here.

Archeology Museum

Located in two buildings close to each other, the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene hosts findings from excavations all over the island, such as small statues, prehistoric items, fragments of ancient temples, coins, jewelry and others.

Ancient Theater

Located on the north side of Lesvos, among the pine trees, the Ancient Theater of Mytilene was originally built in the Hellenistic era and has undergone many reforms.

Caves of Lesvos

There are about 200 caves on the island of Lesvos, many of which are still unexplored. These caves are strongly associated with the Neolithic period and signs indicate their use as a place of worship.

Vranas Olive Press Museum

The Vranas Olive Press Museum is a beautiful industrial building with unique architectural value. It was built by Nikolaos Vranas, grandfather of the poet Odysseas Elytis, and operated until the early 1970s.

Limonas Monastery

The spacious halls of this monastery, founded in 1523, have been turned into an interesting museum that houses various treasures. The monastery also houses a rich library containing more than 15,000 documents and 450 manuscripts from the 9th and 19th centuries. Women are not allowed to enter the monastery.

Roman Aqueduct

This Roman Aqueduct dates from the 3rd century AD and constitutes one of the first great technical achievements of late Roman architecture. It was put into service as an archaeological site in 1995.

İpsilou Monastery

The Byzantine Ipsilou Monastery was established in the 9th century AD to honor St. John. It is located on the road from Andissa to Sigri, at an altitude of 511 m.

It is said that this monastery, built in the name of St. Raphael, the protector of the island, created miracles. The monastery, which houses the skull of Agios Raphael, was built on the site of two previous monasteries and is a holy place of pilgrimage.

The largest mosque in Lesvos, Yeni Mosque is an important 19th century historical monument in the Epano Skala district of Lesvos Town.

Iakovidis Digital Museum

Georgios Iakovidis Digital Museum is the first fully equipped digital art museum in Greece, located in the mountainous village of Chidira Lesvos, where the painter was born, and since its opening in 2008 the museum has become a major attraction for the region.

Ottoman Castle

A fort in the port of Sigri, built by the Turks in 1757 to protect the village from pirates, is small, square in shape, and has typical Arabian architecture.

Valide Mosque

Valide Mosque, built in 1615, is located in the port city of Lesvos, the capital of Lesvos Island.

Teofilos Museum

This museum, which houses 86 paintings belonging to the personal collection of Theophilos, a local folk painter, was founded in 1965 by Stratis Eleftheriades.

Ancient Maraka

Makara is an important archaeological site located in Apothikes, named after Makareas, the first ruler of ancient Lesvos.

Municipal Art Gallery

The Municipality Art Gallery, which houses a valuable art collection, is located in an old, typical mansion belonging to Halim Bey.

Messon Temple

The sanctuary dedicated to Zeus is located near the northern border of the territory of the ancient town of Pyrra.

Olive Oil Production Museum

Located in the village of Agia Paraskevi in the center of Lesvos, the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production is housed in a former public olive press factory. It aims to reveal the technological development in olive oil production over the centuries.

Taksiarhes Monastery

Built in 1700, this monastery is located in Madamados in northern Lesvos. Dedicated to the saint patron of Lesvos, the monastery was restored in 1879. Legend has it that the icon of Taxiarhes in this church was made of clay and the blood of some monks killed by pirates in the Middle Ages.

Agios Therapon

Dedicated to St. John the Healer, this church is located in the center of Mitilli, the capital of Mytilene. The church is a three-aisled basilica with impressive architecture of Neoclassical and Renaissance elements, it was built in the 19th century and has beautiful icons.

Agios Athanasios

This is the Mytilene Cathedral. The church of Saint Athanasios, located in the very center of the town of Lesvos, dates from the 17th century and especially the bell tower has Gothic elements.

Folklore Museum

Located in the renovated building of the old Port Authority of Lesvos, this museum houses various items related to the history and culture of Lesvos, such as everyday life objects, traditional costumes, clay pots, rare book prints, and manuscripts.

Klopedi Sanctuary

The temple was dedicated to Apollon Napaeos, dated to the 8th century BC, but took its final appearance in the 6th century BC.

Byzantine Museum

This museum, which opened its doors in 1978, is home to some rare Byzantine icons, as well as priests’ clothes, pieces of panels from various churches, manuscripts, religious books and other items.

Fossil Museum

Located at the entrance of the Petrified Forest, 12 km from Sigri, the museum presents the evolution of plants on Earth from 3.5 billion years ago to the emergence of advanced plants.
